Simple Tips To Follow When It Comes To Cooking

By Maria Pernel

Cooking can be a great way to save money in difficult economic times. By preparing meals and not eating out all the time you can put more money in your pocket and give less to fast food places and restaurants. This article can help you find ways to do more home cooking.

After cooking, always let your meat rest before serving it. This is especially true when you pull meat from a hot grill. Moisture that keeps your meat tender is sealed within it. When you cut steaming hot meat, the steam that rises is actually the moisture leaving the meat. When you let meat "settle" for at least 15 minutes prior to serving, the moisture and tenderness is preserved.

When you are cooking steaks on the grill or in the broiler in the oven, make sure that you have a spatula on hand to turn the steaks. You do not want to use a fork to turn the steaks as this will pierce the outside of the steak and release the juices inside.

If you are going to braise meat, cook it at a low temperature for a long period of time. By doing it this way, the meat will stay tender and it will retain its juiciness, which in turns, leaves the meat tasting good. Cooking it a high temperature can dry the meat out.

If you are going to be using dried fruits in a recipe and they need to be chopped the best thing to do is thrown them in the freezer three hours before hand. The frozen dried fruits are way easier to chop that way because they will not stick to your knife.

When you are making a killer sandwich, slow down and spread the mayo starting at the corners so that it covers every centimeter of the bread. People tend to just sloppily spread the mayonnaise across the center of the bread. That makes the edges far less flavorful than the middle.

Use leftover meats for sandwiches. Turkey, slow-roasted beef, braised pork shoulder roast and even chicken make great sandwich meat that can be used for meals throughout the week. You may even want to cook just for having lunch-meat that is far tastier than the kind you buy in the stores on hand.

If you are planning on grilling, make sure that you take your steaks out of the freezer at least one hour before you cook so that they can match the room temperature. This will allow you to cook them easier and achieve the quality that you are looking for, by cooking them on the grill.

Make red beans, sausage and rice the easy way. Brown your sausage in a skillet. Add a can of red beans, liquid included, and then add enough instant rice to soak up the juices. Once the sausage is fully cooked turn off the heat and let the mixture simmer. It is a filling, low-cost meal that you can prepare in minutes.

Treat your herbs like fresh flowers. If you are tired of your fresh herbs going to waste before you can use them all, don't keep them in the refrigerator. Instead, trim the stems and place them in a vase in which you would like to keep freshly cut flowers. You will keep the herbs alive and healthy much longer.

Coffee

Campsite cooking can be a breeze if you take along the right tools. Keep your campsite cooking utensils all washed up and stored away ready to go anytime the urge hits you. You can cook anything on a campfire that you cook at home so just plan accordingly. Don't forget a Dutch oven for the baking and the coffee pot for that morning cup of Joe! Don't forget to ground up some good coffee before you go.

To have a clean coffee maker, use table salt and white vinegar. Rub the table salt inside the pot to scrub away the stains. "Brew" the vinegar instead of water (don't use coffee, either!) to clean the inside of the coffee maker. Be sure to run water through the coffee maker several times before brewing the next pot of coffee, though.

Get more out of your small kitchen appliances by considering alternate uses for them. Waffle irons can make a great grilled cheese sandwich or sunny-side-up egg, for instance, and your coffee maker make a wonderful stand-in for a kettle to heat water for tea, soup, oatmeal or anything else that you just need to add hot water to.

Add a small pinch of sea salt to your ground coffee immediately before brewing. This will add a great punch of flavor to every cup. This process works well in either a traditional coffee maker or a french press. Don't add the salt before brewing time though, or your coffee flavor will be compromised.

If you have a cup of coffee left over from breakfast, try adding it to baked goods. Coffee imparts a deep, smoky flavor that pairs especially well with chocolate. Use the flavors together in cake, cookies, or cupcakes. Serve them with mocha or caramel ice cream for a great taste combination.

There is no longer a need to hold onto any fear of the kitchen. By following these ideas and learning the basics of cooking, you will be rewarded. With a little time and practice you will be whipping up gourmet meals to impress your friends in no time at all.

Simple Tips On How To Learn Cooking

By Dorsey T. Emanus

Many people think that they cannot cook. It is not that difficult of a thing to do if you have the right information to follow. This article was written to help the self-doubting cooks to gain the confidence that they need to work magic in the kitchen. Read carefully through these tips and gain the knowledge to help you cook like a chef.

To get the best sear and the crispiest crust on everything from fish to meats to other pan fried foods, the secret is a hot pan. Getting a nice brown color on your food requires a pan that is as hot as possible before the food hits its surface. Because the exterior of the food cooks first, you get only one chance to create that perfect golden color and crispy texture, so heat your pan and oil for several minutes prior.

Check what you have at home and bring any new recipes with you when you go to the store. When you have the recipe with you, you'll have a handy list of what you need to buy. If you don't check what you already have, you may ending up buying more than you need. If you don't bring the recipe, you may forget something that you won't be able to cook without!

You should use applesauce when baking if you want to cut back on the amount of calories the baked good contains. The applesauce will not change the texture or flavor of the baked good. It will cut back on the number of calories that are in the baked good. It will also add fiber to the food.

Place fruit that is not quite ripe in a plastic bag with a few small holes to allow it to ripen. The plastic helps retain the gases used by ripening fruit while the holes allow fresh air to circulate across the fruit. This also helps you keep your fruit fresh longer!

When cooking a big meal, try to do your prep work the night before. This saves you time when you're getting things ready for your dinner the next day. Have everything washed, chopped, and ready to go. You'll thank yourself because there is less stress the night of the big meal.

Take care when storing chocolate for use in cooking. As a rule, only buy as much chocolate as you can use within a few months. Chocolate contains fat, and under the wrong conditions it can turn rancid. Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. A kitchen cupboard away from any heat sources is ideal. Keep the chocolate wrapped in foil or plastic and store it away from anything with a strong smell, as it absorbs odors easily.

If you are out of bread crumbs you can try these simple substitutions in your recipe: cracker crumbs, matzo, crushed cornflakes, grounds oats, or even potato chips. Simply substitute an equal amount of the replacement food for the bread crumbs. You can also make fresh bread crumbs by finely chopping four slices of bread per cup you need.

Don't forget to clean your grill before you use it by scrubbing the grilling surface with a wire brush while it heats up. This way the removed food and grease burn off. Built up food on the grill doesn't add flavor to the meat, but make the fresh food stick to the metal much easier.

Everyone wants to be a better cook. Everyone wants to experiment with fun recipes. Finding the time and feeling the motivation to be creative in the kitchen can sometimes pose a challenge though. In this article we've discussed some fun and innovative ways to bring the magic to your kitchen. Give a couple of these ideas a try tonight. Your taste buds will thank you!

Better Food, Faster, Cheaper: Quick Ways To Improve Your Cooking

By Roxane J. Talisen

Everyone likes food, and everyone likes to eat. Food can be enjoyed even more, if it is prepared by someone who knows what they are doing. The following article will provide you with some great meal time tips that will make your food very tasty.

Layer salads so that juicier ingredients are on the bottom and crisp ingredients are on the top. Those with the highest water content should be at the bottom while the top should have those inclined to wilting, such as lettuce or other leafy greens.

When not in use, put your spices in an area that receives the lowest amount of light and heat. Shelf life can be significantly decreased for those spices which have been exposed to too much light, dampness and heat. To keep your spices spicy and fresh, store them in an area that is cool and dark. Fresh spices can greatly enhance your meals, making this effort well worth your time.

Saute vegetables with chicken broth to cook them in a healthy way. The vegetables get flavor from the broth, and there is no need to use as much oil as it normally takes to saute them. This is a healthy and tasty, vegetable cooking technique.

By doing this, a year-round supply of fresh fruit can be maintained. You also have the benefit of enjoying fruits out of season.

Brine is a method that is great when cooking. Marinate any sort of poultry in brine for about an hour before you cook it, so that it becomes very flavorful.

If you're preparing dried beans, wait for the beans to be softened before adding garlic or salt. These seasoning contain substances that can inhibit the beans from softening. Old beans are especially susceptible to this. Add the seasonings when you beans are semi-cooked, and almost at the texture you are aiming for.

Utilize a cooling rack that has the ability to be stacked. If you are making a large amount of cookies or baked items, laying them out to cool will take over your kitchen. The stackable cooling racks make the best use of your space and allow you to produce many more batches at the same time. Using the vertical space lets your cookies cool while you still have usable space to work.

You need to follow instructions exactly when making macaroni and cheese. This ensures that the macaroni is cooked to perfection and that the cheese is the right consistency to blend well with the pasta. You can use a solid spoon to serve macaroni and cheese. You can use pepper to add some spice to the macaroni, if you choose.

Potatoes are divided in different categories, and each category should be used differently. You can make potato salad with waxy potatoes, but you should use a different kind for fries or mashed potatoes. Russet potatoes will produce the fluffiest results.

When you are faced with cooking a difficult meal, prepping the night before will really reduce your stress. Get everything together beforehand; ensure you have all the ingredients, and chop or measure anything you can in advance. Then all you have to do is put everything together when you get ready to cook the meal.

Make sure you thoroughly clean your utensils before starting to cook. Any residual food matter missed during washing can spoil the dish you intend to cook. Failure to clean utensils properly could also spread food borne illness.

That unmistakable bliss that comes from eating a good meal can be yours. Perhaps you are under the impression that it takes a lot of training to be a skilled cook, but that is not the case. Anyone can cook. The information provided in this article should have given you the confidence you needed to tackle even the most complicated of dishes.

How To Cook The Best Food Possible

By Dorsey T. Emanus

No matter how good a cook you are, nobody has all the answers. Everyone can use some advice to make improvements from time to time. The tips in this article can help you to step up your game in the kitchen. Take a look and see which ones you can incorporate today.

If you are making a dish where you will need thin strips of meat (fajitas, Chinese) freeze your meet for about 20 minutes before cutting. This will allow you to slice the meat very thinly with ease. You may think this sounds a little strange, but it will definitely do the trick.

To get perfectly cooked salmon that is not too dry, remove it from the heat when the fish is opaque and it flakes whenever you press gently with the back of a fork or spoon. Salmon dries out quickly and is easy to overcook; and because it stays pink, color is not an accurate indication of whether or not it is done.

Your cake can be ruined if the baking powder is too old. In most cases, you don't remember when you bought the box you have just found in the cupboard. Don't gamble with it, test it. Put one tablespoon of baking powder in one third cup of water. If it fizzes, it's good to use. If not, throw it away and buy a new box because what you have is too old.

To discover when oil is really hot enough and ready for the food, look to its' surface. If it is no longer completely smooth and appears to be shimmering it is hot enough. When oil is allowed to over-heat it actually starts breaking down and releasing unpleasant compounds and will begin to smoke, so know when to say when!

Never wash chicken or other poultry. Washing it with water doesn't eliminate the bacteria; washing merely spreads the bacteria around to your sink, utensils, and counter top. To kill any bacteria in the chicken and ensure that it is safe to eat, cook it to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

When it comes to meat, remember that cheap and tough definitely pay off in terms of flavor, with a bit of time and patience. Pork shoulder and chuck roasts are prime examples of meats that benefit from slow braising (cooking in liquid), which results in tender, delicious meat to serve with roasted veggies and gravy or to shred for BBQ sandwiches or tacos.

If you find yourself with part of a loaf of stale bread, don't throw it away or feed it to the birds. Instead, turn it into croutons for a soup or salad by tossing cubes of bread with oil and seasonings and baking them until crispy. You can also turn stale bread into breadcrumbs for many recipes.

A granite surface is great for thawing frozen foods, usually taking less than half of the time necessary for typical counter top thawing because granite absorbs the cold (and heat) of items placed on top of it so granite literally "sucks out" the cold from your frozen foods. Granite is also an amazing surface for pastry preparation when dusted with a little flour. If you can't afford to redo your kitchen in granite, check out a granite dealer for scrap pieces or have a smaller piece cut and polished for a fraction of the cost of remodeling your kitchen.

If you are making a sauce and you need to sweeten the flavor of it you can used mashed carrots or unsweetened applesauce instead of adding sugar. This is especially helpful for diabetics or anyone else that is trying to moderate the amount of sugar in their daily diets.

Try mixing course sea salt with a little bit of olive oil for added flavor instead of regular seasonings on your lettuce. Combine it with vinaigrette and you'll have a great tasting dinner salad or a nicely dressed lunchtime treat. The mixture will stay crunchy and stable on your crisp greens.

Cooking the daily meal can seem like a chore sometimes and throwing ingredients together quickly becomes tiresome. Cooking for pleasure can be relaxing, entertaining, and can be delicious. Remind yourself of some of the basic rules of cooking and make cooking fun again for you and your family.

By Alejandro Mole

Some people wonder which foods are by far the most nutritious and which foods to consume frequently to strengthen health. The answer is simple: Superfoods.

As the saying goes, you really are what you eat.

Superfoods

A superfood is any food that is residing, wealthy in vitamins, minerals, high in fiber, low in calories and produces an alkaline pH in the body, as disease can't survive when the body is in an alkaline state.

So which foods are superfoods?

Here is a simple guideline to follow:

Living, whole foods are the most nutritional and most quickly digested foods as a result of the enzymes they possess. Fundamentally all fresh fruits and vegetables when eaten raw are living foods, with living enzymes and possess high nutritional value, specially if they are grown in organic soil. Fruits and vegetables contain lots of fiber, are low in calories, have quite a few minerals and vitamins, are high in anti-oxidants, and pretty much all create an alkaline pH in the body, therefore helping to combat illness.

A fantastic guideline to stick to with vegetables and fruits is to try and consume as many various colors as possible.

One example is:

Red fruits and veggie superfoods are pink grapefruit, tomatoes, red bell peppers, and watermelon. The red varieties contain lycopene, a substance that has been praised for its numerous cancer fighting properties, especially prostate cancer in males.

The purple assortment contains concord grapes, blueberries, red cabbage, and prunes. All of these contain high quantities of antioxidants and help lessen heart disease.

In the green shade, spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, collard greens, bok choy and kale are good alternatives, as they contain lutein, folate and sulforaphane which has been proven to reduce heart disease and macular degeneration by aiding the body in detoxification.

In orange shades, carrots, mango, pumpkin, and oranges function properly. The orange superfoods contain beta-carotene which fortifies the lungs, esophagus, stomach, eyesight, and helps boost the immune system.

Whites have cauliflower, mushrooms, bananas, onions and garlic. These foods contain high quantities of allicin and anthoxanthins which help in keeping blood pressure low and help balance the "good" bacteria in the digestive tract. Proper digestion is a important to great wellness as several ailments in the body originate in the intestines.

The benefits of consuming living, whole, superfoods are immense. So get over to the produce section and make as several meals as colorful as you could.
