Dehydrating Fruits and Vegetables: How to Use a Food Dehydrator

A food dehydrator can be used for several things. You can use it to preserve all kinds of meats, herbs, flowers and fruits and vegetables.

Why would anyone take the trouble dehydrating produce at their houses?

It's well known that veggies and fruits are less costly when they're in season. Through dehydrating, you are able to stock up for 12 months and they don't go bad. Drying is a very quick procedure, provided of course that you have a decent food dehydrator.

Listed here are the steps for dehydrating fruits and veggies:

1. Make sure to search for fresh fruits and vegetables. Overripe or bruised produce wouldn't result in the best dehydrated food.

2. Clean the produce through washing. Hull then cut in the same sizes. Being steady in the thickness will assure they will dry out evenly.

3. When dehydrating pears, apples or any type of fruits at risk of oxidation you can actually choose to treat them with citrus juice or ascorbic acid prior to dehydrating. This would protect the fruits from losing its lively colors before, during and following the dehydration process.

4. For fruits, it's best to blanche potatoes, peas, carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower and corn in boiling water for 5 minutes prior to dehydrating. This will make drying time a lot quicker and it'll also safeguard the vegetables' color.

5. If you would like, you can add flavor to the vegetables by adding sugar, salt or spices; although this is optional.

6. Start loading the veggies and the fruits into your dehydrator. Make certain to not overlap them since this would slow drying time and the produce would cook unevenly.

7. Turn the dehydrator on. Check the user's manual for the best time and temperature to cook the food although expect for the procedure to take at least eight hours long.

8. Check the food frequently as you reach the end of the dehydrating time. To check, take a slice from the dehydrator and allow it to cool. If it feels dry to the touch, it must be done. To check further, cut the fruit or vegetables to a number of pieces and then check the edge. If you're able to see moisture beads, it's not dry enough yet and requires to be put back into the dehydrator.

9. Allow the fruits and veggies to cool for around Half an hour to 1 hour before placing them in bags.

10. The finished products need additional conditioning before they're ready for storage. Put the dehydrated goods in loosely packed containers and shake them at least once a day for 10 days. This is to ensure that the moisture is equally distributed. If condensation shows up, you'd need to dry out the fruits and vegetables again.

How should you choose a food dehydrator? It might seem impossible to some people, but it's really not that hard when you know what to look for. This includes taking a look at the features, shape, size, etc.

CIRCULAR VERSUS RECTANGULAR OR SQUARE

You might think that a food dehydrator's shape doesn't really matter and it's just for aesthetic purposes - wrong. When choosing a dehydrator, you might actually want to choose a rectangular or a square shape over a circular one.

Why? First, a circular dehydrator cuts into usable space. A rectangular or a square machine is easier to lay food on since you don't have to work around a corner. These shapes are also easier to fit on a cupboard for storage. Generally, these shapes save you more space than a circular one.

Secondly, because of how it's designed a circular dehydrator wouldn't be able to cater to long items. Yes, you can always cut foods into smaller portions but this would require more work and time. Not only that, cutting is not even an option with some items such as when preserving a long-stemmed flower.

FAN'S LOCATION

Dehydrating food is supposed to be enjoyable, but cleaning drippings off the fan takes all the fun out of it. This is why consumers must make sure to buy a dehydrator with a fan located at the top or the side but never at the bottom.

Fans are very important in a food dehydrator, but not all models employ one. If you're the type who doesn't like getting what everybody already has, make an exception with this one and get a dehydrator with a fan. Without this, a machine heats unevenly. The temperatures are so different all throughout the machine that some of the food will overcook while some will seem like they were not dehydrated at all.

Thai Rice: Rice is the standard accompaniment of eating Thai food. It is consumed with the majority of Thai dishes. The words "to eat" in Thai are "Kin Khao", which means "to eat rice". There are various different varieties of Rice available. The normal steamed rice is "Khao Suey". The famous sticky rice comes from the “Isan area” (northeast Thailand) and is called "Khao Nio". Thai people eat this sticky rice with their hands, by making the rice into small edible balls. People from the central regions of Thailand often say that eating sticky rice makes you lazy! Hence the people from the “Isan area” often have the wrong reputation of being lazy.

Nowadays people from all over Thailand eat sticky rice. Throughout the cities and rural areas of Thailand, you will find loud, colourful and crowded markets.

They may sell anything from fresh produce, flowers and delicious snacks to clothes and exotic and unusual items. Meat in these markets is often sold in the open air without being refrigerated. However this is perfectly safe as the meat has already been boiled or cooked. This meat is often used to make soup. Similarly fresh fish is also sold in these Thai food markets. In some areas of Thailand the markets also sell bugs, scorpions, larva, beetles and even dogs! Farmers in Thailand make more money harvesting lice instead of rice. A lot of Thai people buy their daily meals in the food markets and take them home to consume. These ready meals can consist of soup, curry dishes, grilled meat etc. T he Thai food markets also sell all the famous fruits and vegetables that make Thai food so distinctive.
